Rolled Insulation Installation

What Is Roll Insulation?

Blanket, or batt and roll, insulation is one of the most commonly types of insulation installed. It’s typically stored in rolls. The most common materials used in roll insulation include:

  • Fiberglass
  • Mineral wool
  • Plastic fibers
  • Natural fibers, such as cotton and sheep’s wool

Roll, or rolled, insulation is also available with special characteristics which may suit your project. It is available:

  • Without facings for adding extra insulation over an existing layer
  • With facings such as vinyl, kraft paper or foil-kraft paper to provide an air barrier and/or vapor barrier
  • With special fire-resistant facings when the insulation will be left open to the living space, such as in an unfinished basement

Best Applications

As the most popular type of insulation available, rolls are suitable for both small- and large-scale insulating projects. Rolls are manufactured at standard widths so they fit snugly between floor joists, attic trusses and wall studs that have been built to code. Continuous rolls can then be hand-cut to fit the desired length.

The most common places to use roll insulation include:

Thermal Resistance

When choosing which type of insulation to install, it’s important to consider its thermal resistance, or R-value. This is the rate at which the material slows the transfer of heat. The higher the rating, the better the insulation is at keeping your building comfortable.

Standard fiberglass rolls have an R-value of R-2.9 to R-3.8 per inch. High-performance fiberglass rolls are rated between R-3.7 and R-4.3 per inch.
